Inside the shower, sweat mixing with water, skin against skin, we remained in awkward silence. A scary silence. Keith caught his breath, then helped me wash my hair. His hands felt so good in my hair. He scratched my scalp with his fingertips. Rinsed my hair, then put conditioner in my mane, rinsed all of that out. I stood there, body temperature so high from having a serious orgasm.

I said, “You tried to choke her to death.”

“Wanted to ram this . . . push it . . . down her throat. Wanted to choke her to death.”

“Wouldn’t have worked.”

“Why not?”

“She would’ve bit down real hard.”

“Nothing comes without sacrifice.”

Towels around our bodies, we headed toward my bedroom.

We stood there for a moment, both of us staring at my broken window, a window now covered by cheap plastic. Everything about this relationship had been broken. Needed to be replaced.

Keith walked over to the window, looked at the damage.

I said, “Viviane’s sister was attacked.”

“Attacked?”

“Q was jumped on. We’re having a bad weekend over here.”

“Where did the assault happen?”

“Down on Crenshaw. Right down the hill from here.” I wrapped another towel around my head. “They’re still at Daniel Freeman. Q got messed up pretty bad. Some crazy people in L.A.”

While we dried off, his cellular rang. Keith looked at the number, then put the phone down.

He said, “Since we were on the news, everybody’s been calling.”

I knew he’d be leaving. I told myself not to stop him from leaving. To let him go. To let go.

His eyes were on my stomach. He said, “Billie . . .”

“Don’t say it, Keith. Whatever it is, don’t say it.”

Then.

His mouth was on my breasts again.
